Since we've rafted there dozens of times before, a couple of weekends ago, we tried another slightly more adventurous activity: driving ATVs on the off road trails in Colorado back country.
Chafee County has hundreds of off road trails that wind past historic mining sites, dilapidated cabins, and old railroad beds. The mountain views are some of the best I've seen in Colorado—and the changing flora and fauna made every hour feel like you were exploring a new place. The first half hour I was admittedly a bit apprehensive I occasionally get motion sickness in cars, and these roads were rough.
We bounced over huge rocks and climbed up steep inclines. But the views were truly spectacular. Grizzly Lake: With huge rocks, deep holes and steep grades, this route is for experienced travelers only.
The road starts east of Salida on U. The first mile is rough, but views from the summit are outstanding. If traveling towards Villa Grove on the back side of the pass, the route can be very rough on motorcycles. Tin Cup Pass : Take off from St. Elmo southwest of Buena Vista. A dozen miles across the Continental Divide takes you to the town of Tin Cup.
This trip is of moderate difficulty. Further south is Marble Quarry Gulch and the ghost town of Turret. ATVs are not allowed on county roads in the town of Turret.
