Frequent stops are very important to allow the engine and transmission to cool. Let up on the brake pedal. Page Section 5 Buying New Tires You will receive genuine Saturn parts and Saturn-trained and supported service people. Genuine Saturn parts have one of these marks.

Before attempting to do your own service work, see Servicing Your Airbag-Equipped Vehicle on page You should keep a record with all parts receipts and list the mileage and the date of any service work you perform. If the octane rating is less than 87, you might notice an audible knocking noise when you drive, commonly referred to as spark knock. Page Additives Additives To provide cleaner air, all gasolines in the United States are now required to contain additives that help prevent engine and fuel system deposits from forming, allowing the emission control system to work properly.

In most cases, you should not have to add anything to the fuel. However, some gasolines contain only the minimum amount of additive required to meet U. To help avoid injuries to you and others, read and follow all the instructions on the pump island. Turn off your engine when you are refueling.

Do not smoke if you are near fuel or refueling your vehicle. If you spill fuel and then something ignites it, you could be badly burned. This spray can happen if your tank is nearly full, and is more likely in hot weather. Open the fuel cap slowly and wait for any hiss noise to stop. Static electricity discharge from the container can ignite the fuel vapor. You can be badly burned and your vehicle damaged if this occurs. Pull the handle with this symbol on it. It is located under the instrument panel on the driver side of the vehicle.

Then go to the front of the vehicle and lift up on the secondary hood release lever. Page A. See Cooling System on page Engine Oil Dipstick Out of View. Page When you open the hood on the 3. Page Engine Oil A. See Power Steering Fluid on page This section explains what kind of oil to use. Both provide easier cold starting and better protection for the engine at extremely low temperatures. Whenever the oil is changed, reset the system so it can calculate when the next oil change is required.

If a situation occurs where you change the oil prior to a change engine oil light being turned on, reset the system. Turn the cover upward to disengage the cover hinges. If it is only dusty, it may be cleaned by blowing compressed air through it from the clean side.

If you use this coolant mixture, you do not need to add anything else. Page Adding Coolant Checking Coolant The surge tank is located on the driver side of the engine compartment.

See Engine Compartment Overview on page for more information on location. Coolant contains ethylene glycol, and it will burn if the engine parts are hot enough. Do not spill coolant on a hot engine. When replacing the pressure cap, make sure it is hand-tight and fully seated. Page Cooling System Cooling System When you decide it is safe to lift the hood, here is what you will see: 2.

Electric Engine Fan B. Coolant Surge Tank C. If it is not, you may have a leak at the radiator hoses, heater hoses, radiator, water pump, or somewhere else in the cooling system. They are under pressure, and if you turn the coolant surge tank pressure cap — even a little — they can come out at high speed. Never turn the cap when the cooling system, including the coolant surge tank pressure cap, is hot.

Coolant contains ethylene glycol and it will burn if the engine parts are hot enough. You can remove the coolant surge tank pressure cap when the cooling system, Page Power Steering Fluid Check the level in the surge tank when the cooling system has cooled down. If the coolant is not at the proper level, repeat Steps 1 through 3 and reinstall the pressure cap. If the coolant still is not at the proper level when the system cools down again, see your retailer. See Engine Compartment Overview on page for the location of the reservoir.

See Recommended Fluids and Lubricants on page Disc brake pads have built-in wear indicators that make a high-pitched warning sound when the brake pads are worn and new pads are needed. Its many parts have to be of top quality and work well together if the vehicle is to have really good braking. Your vehicle was designed and tested with top-quality brake parts.

When you replace parts of the braking system — Be sure to use the following steps to do it safely. People have been hurt doing this, and some have been blinded. Be sure the battery has enough water. You do not need to add water to the battery installed in your new vehicle.

Page 7. Do not let the other end touch metal. Now connect the black negative cable to the negative terminal of the good battery. Page All-Wheel Drive To disconnect the jumper cables from both vehicles, do the following: 1. Disconnect the black negative cable from the vehicle that had the dead battery. Disconnect the black negative cable from the vehicle with the good battery. Headlamp Aiming The visual optical headlamp aiming system has been preset at the factory and should need no further adjustment.

Page To adjust the vertical aim: 1. Open the hood. See Hood Release on page for more information. Locate the aim dot on the lens of the low-beam headlamp. Measure the distance from the ground to the aim dot on the low-beam headlamp. Locate the vertical headlamp aiming screws, which are under the hood near each headlamp assembly. The adjustment screw can be turned with a 6 mm socket. Turn the vertical aiming screw until the headlamp beam is aimed to the horizontal tape line. Turn it clockwise or counterclockwise to raise or lower the angle of the beam.

You or others could be injured. Disconnect the electrical connector from the bulb assembly. Turn the bulb assembly counterclockwise to remove it from the housing. Replace the old bulb with a new one. Reverse Steps 1 through 8 to reinstall. Insert the bulb assembly into the headlamp assembly.

Turn the bulb assembly clockwise until seated. Reverse the steps to reinstall the headlamp assembly. Remove the two screws holding each of the license plate lamps to the fascia. Turn and pull the license plate lamp forward through the fascia opening.

Turn the bulb socket counterclockwise and pull the bulb straight out of the socket. See Scheduled Maintenance on page for more information. Replacement blades come in different types and are removed in different ways. For proper type and length, see Maintenance Replacement Parts on page Page Tires Tires Your new vehicle comes with high-quality tires made by a leading tire manufacturer. If you ever have questions about your tire warranty and where to obtain service, see your vehicle Warranty booklet for details.

The examples below show a typical passenger vehicle tire and a compact spare tire sidewall. Page F Uniform Tire Quality Grading UTQG manufacturers are required to grade tires based on three performance factors: treadwear, traction, and temperature resistance.

For more information see Uniform Tire Quality Grading on page Air pressure is expressed in pounds per square inch psi or kilopascal kPa. Accessory Weight This means the combined weight of optional accessories. Page Intended Outboard Sidewall asymmetrical tire, that must always face outward when mounted on a vehicle. Kilopascal kPa The metric unit for air pressure. Load Index An assigned number ranging from 1 to that corresponds to the load carrying capacity of a tire.

Page Radial Ply Tire A pneumatic tire in which the ply cords that extend to the beads are laid at 90 degrees to the centerline of the tread. A metal support for a tire and upon which the tire beads are seated. Sidewall The portion of a tire between the tread and the bead.

It is not. Page Your vehicle has also been equipped with a TPMS malfunction indicator to indicate when the system is not operating properly. The TPMS malfunction indicator is combined with the low tire pressure telltale.

TPMS sensors are mounted onto each tire and wheel assembly, excluding the spare tire and wheel assembly. Page Tire Inspection And Rotation 6. Proceed to the passenger side front tire. The passenger side front turn signal lamp comes on. Repeat the procedure in Step 5. Proceed to the passenger side rear tire. The passenger side rear turn signal lamp comes on. Do not include the compact spare tire in the tire rotation. Use only radial-ply tires with the wheels on your vehicle.

Page While the tires available on General Motors passenger cars and light trucks may vary with respect to these grades, they must also conform to federal safety requirements and additional General Motors Tire Performance Criteria TPC standards.

Sustained high temperature can cause the material of the tire to degenerate and reduce tire life, and excessive temperature can lead to sudden tire failure. Page Wheel Replacement If you need to replace any of your wheels, wheel bolts or wheel nuts, replace them only with new Saturn original equipment parts.

This way, you will be sure to have the right wheel, wheel bolts and wheel nuts for your vehicle. Page Tire Chains You cannot know how it has been used or how far it has been driven. It could fail suddenly and cause a crash. If you have to replace a wheel, use a new Saturn original equipment wheel. If air goes out of a tire, it is much more likely to leak out slowly. See Hazard Warning Flashers on page for more information.

Open the liftgate. Remove the tire protector foam. Page 5. Remove the wheel retainer bolt holding down the spare tire by turning it counterclockwise. Remove the compact spare tire. See Compact Spare Tire on page for more information.

The tools you will need are located between the compact spare tire and the liftgate. Tool Bag C. Wheel Wrench B. Jack D. Do a safety check before proceeding. See Changing a Flat Tire on page for more information.

Do not place the jack under a body panel. The lower body panel has an arrow to aid in locating the jacking location. If the vehicle slips off the jack, you could be badly injured or killed. Never get under a vehicle when it is supported only by a jack.

Remove all of the wheel nuts. Remove any rust or dirt from the wheel bolts, mounting surfaces and spare wheel. Page Place the compact spare tire on the wheel-mounting surface. Reinstall the wheel nuts.

Tighten each nut by hand until the wheel is held against the hub. Because the nuts might come loose. This could lead to a crash. If you have to replace them, be sure to get new original equipment wheel nuts. In a sudden stop or collision, loose equipment could strike someone. Store all these in the proper place. Page Compact Spare Tire 5. Place the wheel retainer bolt onto the wheel stow rod and tighten by turning it clockwise. The compact spare is for temporary use only.

Replace the compact spare tire with a full-size tire as soon as you can. Although not always visible, dust and dirt can accumulate on your upholstery. Dirt can damage carpet, fabric, leather, and plastic surfaces. Regular vacuuming is recommended to remove particles from your upholstery.

If the locally cleaned area gives any impression that a ring formation may result, clean the entire surface. Notice: Certain cleaners contain chemicals that can damage the emblems or nameplates on your vehicle. Check the cleaning product label. If it states that it should not be used on plastic parts, do not use it on your vehicle or damage may occur and it would not be covered by the warranty.
