And that's not all! Feel at ease Lots of video games, cricket tournaments, team outings, fierce ping pong and billiard battles. Why doesn't Windows play this game? I guess Windows just wasn't meant to really be part of academia. Is there an open source solution for running Windows in a cluster? How many of the fastest clustered computers in the world were running Windows?
Not even a simple grid client for Windows? So other than Microsoft Office, Windows is basically useless for academics. Oh well. Which sure isn't Windows! I guess its no surprise that computer scientists and professors laugh at Microsoft. Even if they did create some sort of distributed Cluster client - you would probably have to enter the install key for each client - then go through the verification for each update.
Maybe its a good thing they'll stay out of hard core academia. It's probable that the students are using either Macbooks or Windows based laptops. You can bet that most of the University in fact is using either Macs or Windows machines. Within the hardcore academia sciences Linux and pure Unix even more so is bound to be popular just like Photoshop is bound to be popular in the graphic arts departments. And maybe the market is just so small that it's not worth their while. Like I said, the right tool for the job.
Yeah, just go out and buy Windows servers. That'll cost, what? Or just use Xgrid with a bunch of normal Mac Pros. What's even better is any system running OSX can join the grid. Yeah, nobody wants clustered computing So what is your point? Anybody can cherry pick requirements that one operating system or program application can fulfill and others can't.
My point is Windows is simply not conducive for a learning environment. Windows simply doesn't cut it. Compare that to the number of students or workers at those places who are running Windows and you will have your answer. Microsoft added clustering features to its operating system when they introduced Windows NT Server 4. You mean the psych majors copying and pasting their latest thesis on wht children don't like broccoli?
When it comes to advancements in computer science, somebody might use Windows to print out the white paper. There are probably more Windows laptops in a freshman physics lecture than that.
Yeah, each server is its own node. How about getting a few hundred machines in play? Can't do that in 'Doze. I like how xgrid allows a node to be connected through the internet. I tried it out in this MBP, I can take advantage of a public cluster and use some of its computing power. Can 'Doze do that? Sigh, like I said, it depends upon the enviornment. How about a graphics arts class using Photoshop? How about an audio engineering class using Sonar? A foreign language class using Rosetta Stone?
And you would be hard pressed to find a mechanical engineering department that is teaching a Linux based CAD program rather than AutoCad or Catia. Again, your point is? You seem to have a real chip on your shoulder for some reason. I'll leave you with this as my last reply because it's a waste of time to try and point out the errors in your theory. Indeed it does. The AutoCad kids would benefit from something like xgrid on Windows.
That way they could be on the road nad take advantage of more computing power than their laptops would otherwise have. But that's not what Microsoft wants. Same with the audio and Photoshop.
Xgrid came out around - why in all this time didn't Microsoft make something equivalent? I mean they made Movie Maker so now everyone can post their kids on Youtube. Linux, you're right. My point is, once again, Windows is not set up for any sort of scientific study. No wonder this country is falling behind in sceince and technology - Windows is so popular.
Yeah, thanks John. It will begin in academia. In real world business solution in companies, a few hundred machines are not clustered. But since you have never held a job in IT in any shape, form or fashion how would you know boy. How stupid can you be? And I already consider you to be a loose cannon, with a big mouth and out of control. So is OS X yet it has a distributed computing client built in. MS is just behind the times.
Or are they intentionally trying to hold people back? Oh yeah, I'm out of control. If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much space.
